Georgian Ruby and Pearl Eternity Band, Antique 10k Rose Gold Foiled Gemstone Promise Ring, Early 19th Century
This lovely early 19th century foiled gemstone ring combines antique cut flat-topped rubies and lustrous split pearls in an eternity band design crafted in 10k rose gold. Each stone is carefully set in an individual pinch mounting for a delicately articulated appeal.Backing gemstones with foils was common practice in the Georgian period of the 18th and early 19th century as a way to enhance the reflective qualities and color of a jewel. The subtle glowing color of these stones range from a raspberry red to a lavender tinged deep pink, a lovely complement to the creamy gleam of the pearls.It's a combination that sends a sincere pledge of devotion and enduring love, according to the language of gem lore.Rubies are traditionally considered symbolic of passion and strength. They've been used for emotional and physical protection, spirtual guidence and creative energy. Legend holds them to be metaphysical watchdogs: having the ability to prophetically darken when their wearer is in danger. Pearls are traditionally used to symbolize purity and faithfulness, and underline the integrity of rubies' promise.Measuring approximately 2.90 mm wide all around and a size 5 1/2, not resizable.In overall excellent antique condition, circa 1810-1830. There's a slight amount of wear, with a couple of the stones showing some nibbles, and shallow chips but nothing overtly noticeable to the eye when worn. The ring has one construction seam and a hairline crack on the inside of the band that do not appear to compromise it's strength or integrity. Important care note: rings with foil backed stones should never be immersed in water: remove before showering, dish washing, water skiing, etc. Moisture could get behind the stone and cause the metal foil to oxidize and darken. Early Victorian Ruby-eyed 18k Snake Ring with Black and White Enamel and Woven Hair
I admit it, I live for rings like this one, a ring steeped in history. When I discovered this little beauty at a shop in Bath, England, a city steeped in the ancient, it just seemed so… right. This ring was an ode to one 'J.V.P' who sadly passed away on July 3rd, 1855. Judging by the lovely white color of the platted hair set into this rings band, I would venture a guess that J.V. was an older person. This ring is beautifully made with black and white enamel details to the head and set with ruby eyes.This ring is fully hallmarked with English marks which indicate that it was made in London, England in 1852 of 18 karat gold. The makers mark is rubbed and only an 'S' remains legible. This ring is a size 6 and it would not be possible to size it. This ring is a true piece of art and history, and while it certainly can be worn, it should be worn gently, care should be taken to keep it dry to preserve the integrity of the hair.
