These large and stunning 18k gold earrings are from the 1880's and bear Portuguese hallmarks on the hinged lever back closures and on the the ear wire. The earrings have been tested and are 18k gold with fully articulated pendant style tear drop hoops with bezel set ruby red paste stone suspended and dangling freely in the middle. The turquoise colored stones are glass which was common in Victorian European jewelry and all the stones in these fabulous earrings are original.
The back of the hinged lever back ear wires have a lovely raised row of forget me not flowers with small Portuguese hallmarks on the tip of the closures. On the front or face of the lever back ear wires is a lovely three dimensional raised three leaf clover containing a single turquoise stone. From each lever back hangs a beautiful articulated tear shaped hoop pendant with a turquoise forget me not flower made up of seven turquoise stones at the base along with two raised dimensional oak leaves. The bezel set ruby red stone dangle is lovely and really sets off these beautiful European earrings.
Because of the oak leaves and the forget me not's it's possible that these were mourning earrings. One of the turquoise stones on the forget me not flower has a tiny nibble but is seriously not noticeable unless looking for it so I only mention for accuracy. These earrings are in beautiful shape and the lever back ear wire closures are in perfect working order.
The measure of each earring north to south from the top of the lever back to the bottom of the hoop is 45mm or 1 3/4" (1 + 3/4") and the widest point east to west is 19mm or 3/4". Combined weight of the earrings is 7.35 grams. I took a number of photos but am only allowed five on a listing so if you would like to see more or any close ups please let me know.
